Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil's former president, has been indicted for allegedly plotting a coup after losing the 2022 presidential election. The charges, brought by prosecutor Paulo Gonet, accuse Bolsonaro and his former defense minister of leading a criminal organization aiming to overthrow democracy. Thirty-four individuals, including military officials, have been charged. Bolsonaro and his allies deny the accusations, claiming political motivation. If convicted, Bolsonaro faces up to 12 years in prison. His legal team has little hope of a favorable ruling, which could further hinder his political ambitions, already affected by a 2030 ban on running for office. The case raises concerns about democratic integrity in Brazil.
